Hours-of-service limits have many exceptions, often based on policies and procedures of the Carriers.
With hours-of-service it’s very important to know what exceptions are. The Drivers needs clarity in what you can use and how to use these exceptions. If a Drivers may end up with a violation because it will look like a rule is being broken if they dont understand the exceptions. .
There are eight commonly used hours-of-service exceptions :
- 160-kilometer radius exception
- Use of a Split-sleeper berth
- Emergency conditions that occur
- Adverse driving conditions that occur
- Electronic logging devices (ELDs) use
- Ferry operations exceptions
- Daily off-duty deferral exceptions
- Personal use of a CMV exceptions
Based on company policies and practices, carriers may allow or prohibit the use of exceptions.
